Who Can Take Your Bricks?

A Children's Book
By: Dana Yager

Each of us,

whether big or small,
have our own 'personal space',
or invisible BRICK WALL

All the bricks on our wall
are stacked neatly there
yet they begin to fall
when we feel ready
to share.

From a simple handshake
to the warmest embrace,
it's your decision who enters
your 'personal space'.

The first brick comes down

when you meet someone new,
and it falls to the ground
when they smile at you.

We make a new friend,

and fall down a few more
as we give them a hug
when they walk through our door.

Growing older, our bricks
come off with more style,
when we experience that goodness
can be more than a smile.

A nice message, good deed,
or just sharing sad news
and the bricks disappear
as they turn into dust
and are replaced with that fearless,
and lovely thing we call trust.

There's no rush! Your heart knows

how many bricks, and for who.
Earning your trust is up to them;
Being trustworthy
is up to you.

Just be careful you don't let
your bricks
stand in life's way.
Like shutting those out
who've been there through it all
and still, love you even when
you've added
bricks to their wall.

As a child, your bricks are
your father and mother
when they love and protect you
beyond any other.
Then,
my dear friend,
comes the time when
your wall falls apart
for that one special person...

who has captured your heart.
